Post of the Day - Why is it so hard to be a good parent?

Why is it so hard to be a good parent?

“What makes a good father?”

If you find the question as challenging as I did, here’s a powerful story from Jeff Sandefer:

A friend who runs a podcast centered on fatherhood asked: “What makes a good father?”

I was stumped.

While driving the next day, I posed the questions to our 21 year-old son Sam, who replied: “Well, early in life it’s just spending time and being there. But once a child starts school, peers start to play a much bigger role, so the most important thing a father can be is a role model.”

Then he added: “That’s what makes it so hard, because all you can do is work on yourself.”

Here’s a challenge for all parents, especially Acton parents: Rather than trying to shape our children, perhaps we should spend more time on our own Hero’s Journey. For a deeper dive, see The Gardener and the Carpenter.
